Kamadhoo

Kamadoo Island is located in the northern part of Baa Atoll, around 130 km from the Maldives’ capital, and within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve—famous for its rich marine life, dense concentration of reefs, and habitats of manta rays and whale sharks. Very close by is the renowned Hanifaru Bay, one of the few places in the world where, in season, you can witness dozens of manta rays gathering to feed at the same time.

Kamadoo can be reached by a domestic flight (via Dharavandhoo Island, followed by about a 20-minute boat ride), by seaplane, or by speedboat from Malé (the journey takes approximately two hours). Around 650 people live on the island—it is a calm inhabited island with clean, cozy streets decorated with flowers and the familiar rhythm of Maldivian village life. Kamadoo does not feel overly touristy and is never crowded: people know each other by name, children play by the beach, and fresh tuna arrives straight from the fishing boats. Palm-lined sandy lanes connect the colorful island homes, small cafés, and local shops—offering a chance to see the real Maldives and immerse yourself in the island’s relaxed everyday life.

Kamadoo is an excellent destination for snorkeling and diving: dozens of dive sites are located nearby, and the island itself has a beautiful house reef. The island’s tourist beach is bright and stunning—wide white sand, vivid turquoise water, and the ability to step into the sea and, within minutes, be above a reef filled with corals and schools of fish. The beaches here are peaceful, the reef is close, and the atmosphere is ideal for a quiet escape away from crowds. Kamadoo is also a fairly green island: next to the tourist beach there is a lovely palm grove, as well as scenic plantations where locals grow bananas for sale.

There is more to Kamadoo than snorkeling: sunrise and sunset fishing trips are popular, as are picnics on sandbanks, dolphin-search cruises, and excursions to neighboring islands. In the evenings, it is especially enjoyable to try homemade Maldivian cuisine and learn about local traditions—on Kamadoo you quickly feel not just like a visitor, but like part of the island family.

Kamadoo is a great choice for those seeking a secluded romantic getaway, as well as for travelers who value an authentic atmosphere and outstanding marine life.
